Improved report cards unveiled at local school

Argen Duncan El Defensor Chieftain Reporter, aduncan@dchieftain.com

Parents of Parkview Elementary School kindergartners are getting a new way to track their children's progress.

Parkview kindergarten teachers presented the new report cards they had designed for their classes at the Socorro Consolidated Schools Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the administration building. The board is to vote on the report cards next month.

"It really reflects more of what we teach than the old report card did," said teacher Karel Sloan.

In a survey and during conferences, parents had positive comments. The teachers changed minor things due to parents' remarks, Sloan said.

Teacher Jennifer Keller said previous report cards didn't give parents and first-grade teachers enough information about what kindergartners learned. To solve the problem, kindergarten teachers changed to report cards based on state standards, as is the trend around New Mexico.

"It explains it in terms the parents can understand," Sloan said.

Report cards are in Spanish and English.

The Parkview kindergarten teachers have shown their new report cards to their colleagues at Midway and San Antonio elementary schools. Parkview first-grade teachers are also redoing their report cards, Keller said.

  • Wilson announced the district had received a $3,627 donation from the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union. Band director John Licha purchased instruments for students, and the rest is going to AIM High alternative high school to pay for field trips and material to make the classroom more interesting, Wilson said.

  • Wilson said construction at Socorro High, Midway and Sarracino Middle schools is progressing but has suffered delays due to mistakes that were not the fault of district personnel.

  • The Graduation Reality and Dual-Role Skills program is operating as an independent contractor with the district, and is issuing a request for proposals to run its fatherhood and DADS program, Wilson said.

  • Anton Salome reported that the district has a contract with an appraiser for the E.E. Torres Learning Center campus in preparation for its sale. The appraiser is to determine a value for the property as a whole and for each individual building.
