They're pros at prose

Pilar Armstrong El Defensor Chieftain Reporter, parmstrong@dchieftain.com

Students from Parkview, San Antonio, Midway, Zimmerly and Cottonwood Valley Charter elementary schools recently strutted their poetic and prosaic stuff in a Declamation competition.

Declamation is a contest in which students are judged on their prose and poetry reading skills. Students who placed first through third received award certificates. The top winners advance to the Thursday, Dec. 4, regional competition in Magdalena.

San Antonio Elementary's Brandon Dennis, took first place in serious prose for "Adam Raccoon and the Flying Machine." Second place went to Maria Carilla of Zimmerly Elementary for the "Book of Esther," while third-place honors went to Changrui Liu of Cottonwood Valley Charter School for "The Garden."

In the poetry division, Ekaterina Makhnina of Parkview Elementary took first place "The Tale of TsarSaltan." Second place went to Mariah Trevizo of Zimmerly Elementary and "Clooney the Clown," and third place went to pajama-clad Anah Farmer, also of Zimmerly, who read "The Night Before Christmas."

Prior to the announcement of winners, students relaxed by telling a variety of jokes to the audience while the judges deliberated.
