Local favorites hit rocky road at Socorro 100

    The New Mexico Desert Racing Club roared into town for the Socorro Valley 100. The off-road race was held at Gordy's Hill, east of Escondida Lake, and featured 99 motorcycle riders, 42 quad riders, and 27 kids — 168 participants in all.

    Robby Clauss, racing for Socorro-based National Vending Racing, won the motorcycle race in the expert class by almost 10 minutes. Clauss finished the 72-mile race in 2:07:51.

    The ProAm and amateur races were 54 miles long, the novice was 36 miles, and the Ironman was 18. Each lap of the course was 18 miles.

    Sam Abeyta and Ty Zimmerman, both of Socorro and racing in the quad experts class, failed to complete the race. Abeyta finished two laps before damaging a sprocket, making it impossible to keep the chain in place. Abeyta was in second place at the time.

    Zimmerman was unable to finish even a lap before his quad stopped running. He had to be towed back to the pit area.

    David Scott of Belen won the quad experts race.

    Quad experts and amateurs raced for 54 miles, while the novices races 36 miles and the recreational riders went 18.

    Dillon Zimmerman, son of Ty Zimmerman, won the Mini/Peewee race, while fellow NVR racer Derrick Chavez came in eighth.

    The next event for the NMDRC is scheduled for Oct. 17 and 18 in Las Vegas, followed by the Carlsbad 100 on Nov. 20 and 21.
