SCHOOL ZONE ACCIDENT An accident occurred in front of Zimmerly School on Franklin St. around 9 a.m. Tues., Mar. 7. A woman pulled her ’67 Ford into traffic from a parked position and cut off another car traveling North on Franklin. The second car was a ’69 Revel. Both cars suffered moderate damage; there were no injuries to either woman.

POETRY CONTEST WINNERS Checks were presented to the winners of the Catholic Daughters of America Poetry Contest. Frank Reynolds took top place with his poem “O Lord” and received $15; in second place was Michael Trujillo who received $10; and in third was Cindy Stuht, who was presented a $5 check. All three winners will have their poems sent to the state association, results to be announced at the State Convention on April 30.

FISHING DERBY The second annual Socorro County Outdoor Association’s Kids Fishing Derby will take place Saturday, March 25, at the Escondida Pond north of Socorro. Children 13 and under are eligible and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The contest begins at 9.a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.

MRS. MYRTLE BRYAN of Socorro is the artist of the month, and her landscape paintings will be on display at the First State Bank on Monday. Mrs. Bryan has been painting for two years. She has many beautiful pictures. Most of them are of local scenes.

LOCAL TEEN COURT visits Santa Fe. Members of Socorro‘s Teen Court spent a day in the state capitol recently and were treated to “the red carpet treatment,” according to program director Lorraine Trujillo. Gov. Gary Johnson had proclaimed Feb. 21 as “Teen Court Day” at the New Mexico Legislature, which drew teenagers from across the state, including five from Socorro.  Teen court is a youth program sponsored by Socorro Mental Health Foundation.

RODEO THIS WEEKEND Get ready for a weekend of high school rodeo on Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16, at the Socorro County Fairgrounds. The New Mexico High School Rodeo Association (NMHSRA) will sponsor the rodeo to benefit a scholarship fund for members who qualify for the national rodeo finals in July in Pueblo, Colorado. Competitors must be members of the high school rodeo association. Events are saddle bronc riding, bull riding, bareback riding, team roping, calf tying, breakaway, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and steer wrestling.

Concert time is at 7:30 p.m. The danceable sound of their music is enriched in the flavors of French-speaking Europe. The musicians will have you dancing in your seat as the music from their guitars, fiddle, bagpipe and accordion, fill the auditorium. Ad Vielle has been a hit at festivals in the U.S., Canada, and Europe and are frequent guests on Prairie Home Companion.

WINDY WEATHER causes power outages around area. What we know is that wind speeds topped out at 59 mph at Contreras in Northern Socorro County shortly after 8 a.m. on Thursday. Gusts registered as high as 54 mph at Socorro Municipal Airport an hour later and 50 mph near Bingham about that same time. The highest gust at Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge was 42 mph Thursday morning. Wind was responsible for power outages in and around the city of Socorro. Half the city was without power at one time or another. Outages varied, but generally power was back on within 45 minutes.

MARGARET STANLEY wins the New Mexico Golden Apple Award Teacher of Distinction. She was awarded on March 2 at the foundation’s annual banquet. She teaches language arts at Sarracino Middle School, is a teacher mentor there, heads up the school’s Renaissance program and coaches the Socorro High School golf team.

NEW MEXICO TECH’S Queens Rugby Club concluded their two-match home set Saturday against the New Mexico State University Lady Chiles by recording their first bona fide victory since reemerging on the New Mexico Tech sporting scene in 2011. After conceding their more experienced downstate rivals a 21-5 win in the first of two seven-woman matches, the Queens raised their play in the second game to pip state 12-10.
