El Defensor Chieftain readers had trouble deciding who is up to the most good. Reader votes were a tie for two organizations for best community service/nonprofit organization.

One of the two is Socorro County Options, Prevention and Education (SCOPE) Health Council. SCOPE promotes healthy eating and active living, relationship building, informing citizens about resources, public health campaigns, and addresses stigma related to mental health and substance misuse.

Some of SCOPE’s community efforts have included helping start the community gardens in Socorro and Alamo, offering free suicide prevention and Narcan trainings, the Stomp out the Stigma Mental Health Run, a youth summit as part of the drug free communities grant initiative, placing bike racks around the county, and the free wellness movie series.
