The Lady Cougars of Alamo Navajo ran their record to 6-1 on the year with a 3-0 sweep in the Mescalero Apache tournament that included a win over No. 3 Fort Sumner/House in the opening round.

Coach J.J. Apachito said he thought his team would have some momentum heading into Mescalero after a runner-up finish in the Magdalena Stampede. He was right as Alamo opened with a 43-35 win.

Hailey Apachito (18) and Sapphira Sandoval (17) combined for 25 points, Koolonna Apachito added six points to the Lady Cougars’ numbers and Claire Apachito had 2.

Alamo topped 3A Capitan 35-21 and won the championship game over host Mescalero Apache 52-33.

The Lady Cougars travel to face To’hajiilee on Dec. 16, and it will be a chance to avenge Alamo’s only loss, which came at the hands of the Lady Warriors in the Steer Stampede championship 44-36. Alamo’s next matchup is against Monument Valley (Utah) in tournament play during the Christmas break on Dec. 27.
