Allan “Al” Grant Hansen

1941-2023

Allan “Al” Grant Hansen passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 24, 2023. Al was born April 25, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Lyndon and Maxine Hansen, who preceded him in death.

Al is survived by his wife, Bev Hansen, who he adored. He is also survived by his sister, Sharane Oehler; his children, Grant (Gloria) Hansen, Laurel (Damon) Deforest; seven step- children and numerous step-grandchildren who know him as theirs wholeheartedly.

Al leaves a legacy echoing with stories about his life’s experiences and filled to the brim with people he would befriend anywhere and everywhere he went. Al had a knack for instilling purpose and confidence in those who (literally and figuratively) looked up to him: his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, students and friends were all made a little stronger, a little more accepting, and a little better because they knew Al. Students remember him as “everyone’s favorite teacher” decades after attending his class. Each can attest that his booming voice and resounding laughter will not soon be forgotten.

Al became a teacher after graduating from Mankato State University, proceeding to travel to Alaska to teach. Later, he relocated to Wisconsin to continue teaching and spent some time in school supply sales, as well. He even graced New York City with his musical talents. After they got married in 1997, Al and Bev moved to Socorro, New Mexico, where their home became a destination family looked forward to visiting for many years to come. Al’s love for Beverly was boundless and contagious; his passions for birding, duck hunting, Labrador retrievers, pigeons, photography and people were profound. A gentle giant through and through, Al will be remembered fondly for his ability to make every individual feel like the most important person. He saw the absolute best in people who others dismissed, so we remember the absolute best of him.

If you’re so inclined, pour a scotch, throw a dog a bone, take a longer look at the birds, and/or snap copious amounts of photos in his honor.
