After a 2-18 record in the 2022 volleyball season, Socorro is headed in a different direction following the resignation of head coach Christie Chavez with two games remaining on the Lady Warriors’ schedule.

Junior varsity coach Jaden Jones stepped into the head coach’s role for the second time this season against No. 3 Hot Springs on Socorro’s senior night.

While it was a 3-0 loss, Jones got the most out of a roster that had been hit hard by the departures of four players and a coach.

Socorro battled tough up front and got great play from outside hitters Lila Azar and Tamra Fowler. Azar also had a big night blocking along with Reyna Alvarado.

With the season closing, Jones had hoped the Lady Warriors would finish strong, and they didn’t disappoint her.

“There was a lot of effort, a lot of teamwork, a lot of communicating. I’m proud of what they did today,” Jones said. “They kind of played differently. They really came out hot in the second game and stayed in it. Their heads were in it. They played as a team. It fell off, but they did great.”

Azar’s play drew some praise, too.

“I think she figured out how to read those short hitters. I’m very proud of that. She worked hard. Her hips were good, and her blocks were outstanding,” Jones said.

Jones would have liked winning the Lady Warriors’ final home match.

“I’m sorry for the seniors who had to go out this way, but I’m proud of how they played. The morale was up. Their attitudes are up. Overall, I’m proud of how they played tonight,” Jones said. “Would you like to get thrown into this situation? Today was crazy. I was running all over the place trying to get things situated, but it was good. I’m happy to be here for the girls and help them in any way possible.”

The Search for a Coach

Athletic Director Jarrod Storey will wait until the state volleyball tournaments end before pursuing a coach to take over the Lady Warriors program.

“We will post the position after the state tournament and start looking for coaches. I plan to reach out to coaches from around the area, not just in Socorro,” Storey said. “Perhaps in the Belen area and even go to Albuquerque to find this coach. We need someone to bring the volleyball program back to where they were two years ago.”

Last year, Socorro was 20-6 overall, and the Lady Warriors were 49-18 and had two undefeated district championships over a three-year string.

While there is no “hire-by date,” Storey keeps a timeline in mind.

“I prefer to get them hired before the spring to get in those workouts,” he said.
