Socorro High School’s dance team, the Charisma Blues, entered their second competition of the year, the Spirit of Hope at Tingley Coliseum on Feb. 5 and came home with some wins.

The team took second for their jazz routine out of five competing high school teams and third place for their poms out of nine high school teams.

“I’m just really proud of them from going to not having a team to just starting one up this year, they’ve really put in the work,” said coach Jill Madrid-Angel.

Several students also placed for their solo and duet performances.

Sienna Bunning took first with her lyrical solo. Emeleigh McDaniel took third place for her solo, a jazz routine. Elizabeth Moellenbrock, and Sienna Bunning took first with their lyrical contemporary duet. Lea Acosta and Emily McDaniel performed a jazz routine duet that took first.

“I’m very proud of them and I’m excited to see how we do at State,” said Madrid-Angel.

The teams state competition will be at the UNM Pit on Feb. 19. The Socorro cheer team will also be competing on Feb. 18.

The dance team has also hosted a dance camp with 62 young participants ranging in age from 4 to 12. The community dance camp ran Tuesday through Thursday and children were set to perform at Friday’s basketball game. Since that game was canceled, they are performing at the girls basketball game on Friday, Feb. 18 during the half time break.
