Darrell Lee Hicks

Darrell Lee Hicks, beloved husband, passed away at UNM Hospital on December 28, 2022. His wife of 37 years was at his side when he passed. Darrell (85) was the son of Winona and Jason Hicks.

Darrell started his higher education at NMT and earned his PhD in Mathematics at UNM. He spent 18 years as a researcher at Airforce Research Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory Albuquerque. He followed that with 20 years as a researcher and educator at University of Colorado Denver, Michigan Technological University, Rice University, and University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Darrell’s intellectual passion and his sense of humor helped him be an inspirational mentor, researcher, and teacher. He inspired his students to go beyond what they thought they were capable of.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Lorie Liebrock, and his brother, Don Hicks.

Darrell will be missed immensely, but he will remain in the hearts of those he loved and will continue to inspire the students he taught.

Darrell’s care has been entrusted to Daniels Family Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Socorro Animal Shelter.
