Coming into the Steers Stampede tournament the Socorro Lady Warriors were winless. Double digit losses to West Las Vegas and Tohatchi did not bode well to open the 2021-22 season. The team was going up against an undefeated team in Navajo Animas. Socorro was down 17-8 after the first quarter. Somehow, the Lady Warriors took home its first win of the season in a close one, defeating the Animas Panthers 53-41.

“My goodness what a win for us,” Warriors Head Coach Juan Alvarado said. “This was a hell of a comeback here tonight. That opponent across from our bench gave us one heck of a game today.”

In the first quarter the Lady Steers were unable to contain the onslaught coming from the Cougars offense. Junior Azure Green was causing havoc on the boards both offensively and defensively which put Socorro in a hole.

The Lady Warriors also could not find the bottom of the net, as well as the rim not being kind with multiple shots almost getting home. Then, the Lady Warriors went full on Candace Parker style.

Swoosh from three by Taelene Fowler. Swoosh from three by Tamra Fowler. It was three pointer after three pointer that issued the Lady Warriors its first lead of the game at 44-43.

“Coming out from different sports for players you can start out slow” Fowler said. “We weren’t ready to get going and once you see fans out you get a feel for the game. Being united as one is a big part of this team. Everybody in the game hyping you up.”

Jajandrian Jackson busted out of the locker room hyped up after the big Socorro win.

“Let’s freaking go! We got those tall girls today and we’re going to keep on fighting! This team is not afraid of anybody. Let everybody know!”

Socorro was set to host St. Michaels next on Dec. 6.
