Iise Magener

Ilse Anna Magener, 91, of Magdalena, NM passed away on Friday the 18th of December, 2020.

Born the 23rd of November in 1929 in Hamburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Kapitän Adolf Magener, and Martha Ammende.

Her ex-husband, Gerd Magener and her beloved brother, Hans Främke preceded her in death.

Ilse studied fashion design in Hamburg. She was a gifted artist, whose work was sold in galleries worldwide.

Ilse is survived by her brother Peter (Pit) Främke and wife Moni Fügel, daughters Yvonne, Audry and husband Ghassan, and three sons, Florian, partner Diane, Fabian, and Rolf, grandchildren: Dina, Noha, Malak, Idalie, Zara and great grandchild, Hala.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no memorial service which probably will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, take the time to watch a wonderful New Mexico sunset.

Ilse moved to South Africa in 1955, where she met her husband, and had five children. They started a restaurant, The Log Cabin, in Johannesburg, which was the first charcoal grill. German bratwurst, potato salad and steaks were served, and they were very popular with the movie goers, as they were still open serving brat and curry wurst with good German filter coffee with individual filters, and cute individual creamers.

The restaurant unfortunately burned down with a fire starting in the apartment above them.

They then started a very successful business manufacturing custom lamps.

Ilse did most of the designing and decorating, and co-managed a wonderful staff in their factory. Ilse also made sure all the orders left perfectly and were delivered promptly, as well as juggling making school lunches and delivering kids to different schools before going to the factory in the morning.

In 1972, the family retired to Mijas, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. They designed a very unique house in the foothills of Mijas, which had magnificent views. Ilse started painting again, and sold at the very popular open air flea market in Marbella, and to various high end stores and galleries.

Ilse had a scrapbook of beautiful photos of Santa Fe, and was inspired by Edge of Taos, by Mabel Dodge Luhan, and in 1996 she moved to Magdalena where she spent many wonderful years surrounded by the eclectic mixture of people that make Magdalena, Magdalena.

She hosted many “music nights” where many local musicians would meet and play.

Ilse loved gardening, feeding her numerous quail and hummingbirds, and relished drinking coffee with guests while enjoying the view from the patio.

She was known for making the strongest coffee in the west!
