It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our father, Joe L. Gutierrez, on March 6, 2023. Dad was born in Socorro, N.M., to Luciano and Juanita (Tarin) Gutierrez on November 7, 1937, where he grew up with his four brothers and sister.
Joe graduated from Socorro High School in 1957, where he played football and basketball and met his wife of 51 years, Barbara (Garcia). Dad loved playing men’s fast-pitch softball and earned the nickname, “Bullet.” He also loved playing golf.
Joe enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and honorably served as a PFC until September 1963. Joe worked various jobs within Socorro, but the one he enjoyed most was working at NM Tech’s Macy Center.
We will miss our dad and his funny sense of humor, but we are comforted in knowing he is reunited with our Heavenly Father; our mom, Barbara and our brother, James. Joe is also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (Tony, Slim, and Greg), and sister (Mela Lucero).
Joe is survived by his daughters – Deb, Valerie (Rochelle), Jo Lynn (Art), and Cecilia (James); his brother Ricky (Grace); his loving grandchildren – Amanda, Genevieve, Nick, Brenna, Roman, Aaron, Ryan and Caitlyn; his great–grandchildren – Kylie, Chase, Lily, Luke and Haley. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joe’s burial will take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 2 p.m., at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we ask any donations to be made to your local Veterans’ community service.
