Precisely what might Mayor Bhasker think qualifies him to seek a seat in New Mexico’s State House? As Mayor of Socorro for over 30 years, he has presided over a community in steady decline. Within just the past decade employers have left town and employment opportunities diminished. Taxes have risen, utilities have nearly doubled, and the population has shrunk. All the while he’s spent a goodly portion of his time attempting to convince residents he can provide cheaper electricity than the Rural Electrical Administration via a paper G&T middleman. As evidence he included a photo of a leaning power pole in citizens’ monthly utility bills. This is not the track record of a politician worthy of promotion to a position of heavier responsibility. By any measure, Ravi Bhasker ‘s tenure as Mayor of Socorro has been a dismal failure. He is not worthy of a seat in New Mexico’s State House.
