New Mexico Tech hosted three regional university rugby teams in a tournament held Saturday, March 26.

Teams from the University of Texas-El Paso, University of New Mexico, and New Mexico State University traveled to Socorro to compete in the annual regional rugby tournament, titled the “Rio Grande 7s Bowl.”

NMT Miners Coach Gearoid Dunbar said great weather brought out an enthusiastic crowd of supporters that cheered on the teams for the 10 matches.

The Miners entered two teams in the tournament – NMT Black and NMT Blue.

“NMT Black was the overall winner, beating all other teams with relative ease,” Coach Dunbar said. “Except for the match against NMT Blue – that was the closest game for NMT Black all day.”

Scores from NMT Black’s undefeated day:

NMT Black vs. UTEP: 47-5

NMT Black vs. UNM: 50-0

NMT Black vs. NMT Blue: 27-7

NMT Black vs. NMSU: 59-0

The Miners play next at the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) 7s West Qualifiers Match Saturday, April 9, at Cal Maritime in Vallejo, California. A win will earn NMT a berth in the NCR National Championship, to be held Memorial Day weekend in New Orleans.
