Socorro High School went into a lock down Wednesday afternoon to investigate a report of a gun on campus. A search of every student bag, common areas, classrooms and the school’s grounds and roof turned up no weapons. The lock down was lifted before the end of the school day.

A teacher overheard students having a conversation about a gun in someone’s backpack, said Superintendent Ron Hendrix. The students dispersed before they could be spoken to, and the school was put into a lock down.

“Law enforcement was terrific,” said Hendrix. “They were there in moments and huge show of force. They did a great job helping us.”

Parents were not notified as the lock down was ongoing, because no weapons had been found and school administration was focused on figuring out if there was a gun on campus. Hendrix said that during a lock down, the school will notify parents as soon as they have definitive information of a danger.

“When we have a lock down, we will let parents know the minute we have something to let them know about. If there’s a danger, we will let them know immediately if there is a danger,” said Hendrix.
