Eight first-place victories, including sweeps in the relays by the Warriors and Lady Warriors track and field teams, led to first-place team victories on April 6 at Cloudcroft’s Mountain Top Relays.

Socorro’s Warriors scored 77 team points to outdistance second-place Tularosa’s 67, while the Lady Warriors needed all their points to edge Capitan 73-69.

Freshman Jay Lee picked up the high-point individual award after taking first place in the pole vault and long jump, where he edged second-place finisher Marcus Armijo by a half-inch.

The Warriors also picked up wins in the 4X100 relay, with Isaiah Ocampo, Caden Moreland, Lee and Armijo posting a 44.23. In the 4X200 relay, Ruben Gonzales, Jerry Garza, Isaiah Ocampo, and Kaden Dow blazed to a 1:38.25.

The Lady Warriors enjoyed an equal amount of success in their relay events, with Jaylin Gonzales, Faith Lucero, Jaylin Olguin and Tamra Fowler running a 52.29 for first in the 4X100 relay. The speedy set also turned around and took first place in the 4X200 relay with a 1:58.23 clocking.

The tightest race of the day came in the girls’ 100-meter dash, where Socorro had a 1-2-3 photo finish with Tamra Fowler’s 13.29 one step in front of Faith Lucero (13.40) and Jayline Gonzales’ 13.41.
