The October 29 death of a student at New Mexico Tech was an apparent suicide, according to a New Mexico State Police spokesperson.

According to the initial report from state police, on Saturday, Oct. 29, at around 8:11 p.m., campus police officers responded to a call regarding a male stabbing victim. The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The New Mexico State Police Crime Investigations Bureau was called in to investigate, as well as the Office of the Medical Investigator to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

A separate news media that week reported that the incident was initially being investigated as a homicide.

On Thursday, the state police released an update on the case.

“After further investigation, this incident appears to be an apparent suicide,” the statement from NMSP said.

It is the policy of El Defensor Chieftain to not release a suicide victim’s name out of respect for the privacy of the family and friends of the deceased.
