Ask The Bugman

The coronavirus is getting worse throughout the country. It is recommended that we wear masks, socially distance and avoid large gatherings.

There is one other thing we should do, and that is to try to keep our immune systems as strong as possible so it can fight the virus if we get it. There are ways to keep our immune system strong, including what we eat, how well we sleep, exercise and other things.

One other factor is pesticides. According to one report, there is considerable evidence that widely used pesticides can suppress immune responses to bacteria, viruses, parasites, and tumors, making people significantly more vulnerable to diseases. And the coronavirus is a disease.

Respiratory exposure is particularly hazardous because pesticide particles can be rapidly absorbed into the lungs and into the bloodstream. Vapors and very small particles of pesticides post the most serious risks.

Pesticides have proven to cause reproductive and development effects, cancer, kidney and liver damage, endocrine disruption, etc. Research shows that children are even exposed to pesticides in utero.

You can research ways to improve your immune system in other ways. Wear a mask, socially distance, avoid gatherings and don’t use pesticides or allow them to be used in your home or business.

Most pests can be controlled safely and effectively using common products, such as peanut butter and jelly, grits, baby food jars, flour, brown paper bags, alcohol, salt water, vinegar, peppermint essential oil, dirty socks, cheese, beer, duct tape and other stuff.

You may have to call an exterminator if your home is infested with yellowjackets or termites, but not many other pests. There is certainly no reason to have your house sprayed on the inside on a regular basis.

The most effective part of pest control is exclusion. Here is how to pest proof your house. The purpose of pest-proofing your home is to help keep cockroaches, ants, scorpions, centipedes, spiders, rodents and other pests out. Along with pest proofing your house, you need to remember to keep all of your sink, tub and floor drains closed at night. This will prevent cockroaches from coming up the drains from the sewer system or septic tank.

If you don’t have a drain cover, you can fill a Ziploc bag with water and place it over the drain. That will keep the roaches out. You should install door sweeps on all outside doors that need them. If you can slide a piece of paper under a door, it needs a door sweep. Also, add a door sweep to a door going into the garage.

Contact me and I will help you control any pests you have using earth friendly methods. I was IPM specialist for the University of New Mexico for 12 years and never used any toxic pesticides or rodenticides and the students, faculty and staff loved it. I was also IPM manager for the city of Santa Fe and personally took care of more than 80 city buildings and never used a drop of liquid pesticides and we never used Roundup on city property.

I have more than 45 years of experience in the pesticide industry and know the hazards of toxic pesticides. I want to help reduce, and hopefully, eliminate pesticides in society. Pesticides are weapons of mass destruction and can be hazardous during the pandemic.
