TWO PEOPLE arrested for smuggling 55 pounds of marijuana were charged in Magistrate Court with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. A married couple was stopped on I-25, near the bridge that connects to Luis Lopez. Officer Scott Weaver has originally stopped them for speeding, but with the help of a U.S. Border Patrol dog, found the marijuana wrapped in 48 bundles, in a secret compartment. The couple bonded out of Socorro County Jail the same day they were arrested.

A HUNGRY THIEF or thieves helped themselves to canned food stored in the parsonage of the First Baptist Church. Church officials discovered the break–in and reported it to the police. Entry was made by breaking double-paned windows on the north side of the building with a brick wrapped in an old t-shirt. The intruders made their way to the “food closet” where nonperishable food is stored. Among the missing items were canned milk, tuna, fruits and soups. Value of the stolen food was estimated at $200 and the cost to replace the window was around $65.

PEOPLE IN SOCORRO COUNTY were subject to hazy days this week, due to the Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire in the Gila Mountains in southern Catron County. Though the fire is a good 100 miles away from Socorro, high winds have periodically blown smoke over the city during the week and could continue to do so over the weekend. Health officials warn that air quality may be poor. They recommend that people sensitive to the smoke limit outdoor activities. Others should also keep their windows closed when smoke is in the air and avoid using swamp coolers as they circulate outdoor air inside.

ON THE EVENING of May 10, K-Bob’s steakhouse partnered with the FFA and Socorro High Athletics to raise a combined $1,810 for the organizations. The groups personally invited their supporters to eat for free at K-Bob’s. Each guest was able to order anything off the menu, at no charge, in exchange for making a $20/person donation. During the night, student representatives greeted guests, accepted donations and sold balloons filled with prizes. Funds will be used to assist students as they travel to events and games throughout the school year.
