DR. WORKMAN to be honored by the New Mexico School of Mines this week. Dr. E.J. Workman is a noted scientist who was president of the school from 1946 to 1965. He was the one who proposed changing the university’s name to the New Mexico Institution of Mining and Technology. Doctor Workman will be honored during the renaming of the Research and Development building at New Mexico Tech. The buildings new name will be the “Workman Center.”

GOLDIE HAWN, one of Hollywood’s biggest sex symbols, has a new movie coming to town. Co-starring Oscar-winner Peter Sellers, “There’s a Girl in My Soup” looks to be a fun rom-com. The poster’s slogan states “Mm’mm Mm’mm Good.” The film will run next weekend at the Loma theater.

October 21, 1971

DELOLA ESTASA is expanding development. With the construction of the companies’ first model home, Delola will become more than dreams on blueprint. General Contractor George Galbadon has been in the business since 1955, supervising hundreds of buildings around the county. “We have a lot of room to grow,” Jim Grice of the Delola corporation said.

SOCORRO MEN were honored. Tony Oliver, Terry Robinson and Frank McWorther have been chosen in the 1971 edition of OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN OF AMERICA, according to the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce. Nominated earlier this year, the men were recognized for their community leadership and professionalism. The honor is awarded to men between the ages of 21 and 35.

October 16, 1996

VERONICA SMITH was chosen as Ms. Alamo for 1996-97. The contest was part of the yearly Alamo Navajo contest. The senior at Alamo Navajo Schools received a $100 cash prize and a Pendleton blanket, courtesy of the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise in Window Rock, Arizona.

SOCORRO WARRIORS had a tough week. The boy’s soccer team had a marathon of four games in five days. They were run down but are not out of the state tournament running yet. This included an NMMI player throwing a punch against the Warriors to start off the team’s streak of losses. Fans are invited to attend Saturday to support the Warriors.

SEARS is reaching out to local entrepreneurs in Socorro to become a part of the nationwide company. The pitch is that “SEARS is America’s #1 retailer of appliances, electronics, and lawn and garden equipment. We are currently seeking candidates to own and operate a SEARS Authorized Retail Dealer Store in Socorro.”

BOSQUE RESTORATION had more than 60 volunteers coming out to the area this past week. More than 600 native plants were put in place surrounding the area off the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Participants not only helped but also learned about plant life from the Bosque Wildlife Preservation staff.

BIG SCAM for an elderly couple in San Antonio. Choosing to remain nameless, the couple is out an estimated $8,000 after a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be their grandson. Socorro County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Preciliano Vaiza reported that the couple made two wire transfers on October 8, the first being for $5,000. The investigation is still ongoing.
