The parquet courts glistened, the scoreboard flashed, and a newly-maskless crowd cheered as the Socorro High School Warriors girls’ basketball team entered the arena for their last game of the season. It was a night to remember (for better or worse) for both teams as the Warriors exhibited their dominance early and never let up, ending the game with a staggering 54-4 victory over the Cobre Indians.
The Indians were able to score only two baskets as the Socorro girls used their height and numbers advantage to control the match throughout. Warriors senior center, Taelene Fowler (standing at 5’7” according to MaxPreps.com) towered over the Cobre team and dominated in the paint. At the same time, senior guard and power forward Savannah Castagnetto prowled the outside, punishing Cobre High School with perimeter shooting.
Though the game was a blowout from the outset, it was played to completion after both teams opted to continue. But the Indians never found their footing and, in the end, went home with their worst defeat of the season. CHS ends their 2022 run with a 2-23 record (0-6 in 3A dist. 2) and a last place ranking in the division.
On the other bench, second-year head coach Juan “Pepe” Alvarado led his girls to a staggering 15-6 season record (5-1 in 3A dist. 2) and all but assured the Warriors a top seed in the State Tournament. SHS will go into the tournament, which kicks off Mar. 4 at the Pit in Albuquerque, riding a five-game winning streak and, with their most recent victory, confidence at an all-time high.
The Warriors haven’t lost since a 58-53 defeat to Hatch Valley (Coach Alvarado’s hometown) on Feb. 1. Alvarado and the SHS Warriors will look to finally take home the trophy after a disappointing 2021 season was derailed by Covid-19.
