Socorro dominates District 3-3A track and field meet

Paced by a slew of season-best finishes, Socorro dominated the District 3-3A track and field meet in Truth or Consequences on Friday, with the boys’ and girls’ teams winning first place at Hot Springs High School.

The Warriors’ domination was so complete that Socorro will have entries in 17 of the 20 events at this weekend’s Nusenda track and field championships.

It was also a record-setting day for standout senior Braden Mounyo, who broke his third individual school record of the season and also lowered his own mark in the 300-meter hurdles. Mounyo also took gold in the 110 hurdles, and 200-meter dash, and as part of Socorro’s 4×400 relay team.

Jay Lee was another multiple winner for Socorro as he took down district titles in the 400 meters, long jump and pole vault. Lee was second in the javelin and was on the Warriors’ first-place 4×400 relay squad.

The Lady Warriors were just as impressive, with 12 gold medals, including three for eighth-grade distance runner Abby Cadol, who took down titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meters.

Senior sprinter Faith Lucero won the 100, 400 was second in the 200 meters. Ma’Leah Brown (300 hurdles), Adriann Gutierrez (high jump), and Breanne Lucero (pole vault) were also first-place winners.
