Connor’s Causes’ runners and walkers filled the streets of Socorro on Saturday.

The 2023 Connor’s Causes 5K/1-mile walk drew 185 participants to Socorro on May 6 to raise money and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“I really look forward to seeing everyone yearly,” Conner Johnston said. “We had a big turnout last year, and I’m hoping we have one this year, too.

While the goal was 15 participants short of the 200-runner goal Johnston had set for this year, the group’s can-do-attitude meant fun for everyone as soon as they arrived at the Socorro Plaza.

At only 6 years old, Johnston (now 13) came up with the idea of hosting his own 5K after participating in a run and enjoying the camaraderie and cupcakes. Last year Connor’s Causes raised $4,000, and the 5K entry numbers have increased each year. A final tally of funds for this year will be finished after several groups complete their donations.

“Another successful Connor’s Causes 5k or 1-mile walk for Cystic Fibrosis completed! We had 185 participants sign up. Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants for making it a success. We appreciate you all,” Jeannie Johnston said via the Connor’s Causes Facebook page. “A special thank you to the city of Socorro and NM Tech police for being so supportive and helping to make sure our runners were safe.”

The sponsors for the 2023 Connor’s Causes 5K include Breakfast Burritos and More, Buckhorn Tavern, Home and Country Realty, Leseberg’s Auto and Towing, Mine Country 102.1, Positive Outcomes, Socorro Codes, Socorro Eye Care, Socorro First State Bank, Socorro Healthy Kids, Socorro Physical Therapy & Fitness, State Farm, Damien Ocampo, Socorro, Striders and Riders, Sweet Occasions, World Tree Games and Yo Mama’s.
