Firefighters on the scene of a house fire on Meek Road Sunday afternoon battled the flames for more than two hours.

Multiple Socorro County fire departments responded to a structure fire on Sunday afternoon at the corner of S. California and Meek Road around 1 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find an adobe home fully involved and resorted to bringing in the City of Socorro’s ladder truck to battle the blaze from above. Fire crews worked quickly to prevent the fire from gaining access to a nearby home.

There appeared to be no injuries, but firefighters were forced to hydrate as they worked in 84-degree temperatures. Meek Road and the immediate area around the blaze was shut down as cleanup work begins.

According to Socorro Fire Chief Lawrence Baca, firefighters reported to the home last week due to a chimney fire and a report that some people had been using the vacant structure.

“It appears there had been people who have been staying there,” Baca said. “The fire did not appear to be intentional.”

While the scene is cordoned off to the public, Baca said there is no investigation concerning the blaze.
