Les Torres

1954-2023

Lesmen L. Torres, aged 69, of Socorro, NM, passed away on July 30th, 2023. Surrounded by his loved ones. Born, April 9th, 1954, in Socorro, NM. The cherished son of the late Rosa (Rose) and Meliton (Tony) Jr Torres.

A proud graduate of Socorro High, Lesmen dedicated himself to law enforcement and the betterment of his community. His professional path led him through every law enforcement agency within Socorro. His tenure included the New Mexico State police, New Mexico Tech and Socorro City Police departments. He also served as Undersheriff under Billy Romero. In 1995 he was elected as the Sheriff and served one term for the Socorro County Sheriffs office. His remarkable career concluded as Adjutant to the Sheriff under Philip Montoya.

Lesmen’s unwavering love for Socorro was evident in every facet of his life. Beyond his professional duties, he actively endeavored to enrich the cultural tapestry of the community. He was recognized with accolades like the Jefferson Award and was instrumental in introducing in-school programs such as D.A.R.E and G.R.E.A.T.

His community outreach initiatives were extensive. He spearheaded weekend teen dances, supported the NMT 4th of July Celebration, and generously contributed to the Warrior’s football festivities by purchasing their cannon, fireworks, and the walk-out tunnel for Friday night games. One of Lesmen’s most profound impacts was the positive influence he had on young individuals, always striving to make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Moreover, Les was passionate about promoting mariachi culture. He organized annual events, notably the “Merry-Achi Christmas” celebration. These concerts served a dual purpose: they were not only entertaining performances but also a way to immerse Socorro’s youth in the rich tradition of mariachi music. His ultimate aspiration was to launch a dedicated mariachi music program within local schools.

In his later years, while he cherished solitude, Les remained deeply connected and committed to the Socorro community.

He leaves behind his two devoted sons, Jason and Brandon, and his loving sister, Gilda, Two nieces Tanya and Stephanie, and Nephew Steven.

A memorial service in honor of Lesmen will be held at the City of Socorro Convention Center on Saturday, September 16th, from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Lesmen’s legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched. He will be fondly remembered for the lives he uplifted and the profound sacrifices he made for his beloved community.
