The Friends of the Library in Magdalena brought forth an extensive list of repairs to the Magdalena Council Meeting on May 13, dominating the first part of the meeting.

A representative of the Magdalena Friends of the Library printed and distributed the list of improvements the library needs to the council and read it out loud to them. It included new plumbing, proper drainage outside, fresh paint, new windows, weathering issues and other security and safety issues. According to the librarian, Yvonne Magener, the library has had the repair needs for over a year.

In other business, the council rescheduled the next meeting for May 22 due to the upcoming holiday. They also discussed, rearranged and approved the 2026-2030 Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP), which included putting the library needs higher up on the list at trustee Donna Dawson’s suggestion.

The council also discussed a mutual aid agreement for fire and rescue and emergency medical services between the Village of Magdalena and Catron County. Mayor Richard Rumpf said, if Catron County has a “major incident” and the Village has available rescue services at that time, then they will help respond to the incident.

It was also brought to the attention of the council by Finance Manager, Michael Steiniger, that the council needed to make a decision regarding reimbursement of the Law Enforcement Recruitment and Retention Fund from the General Fund for an overage. He said that the department overspent by $2298.96 and that “technically officers got payments that were not approved by the council.” The council approved by a majority vote to reimburse the funds. There was a concern about how the money is being moved around during public comment.

The council also voted to approve hiring Alexandra Montgomery as Police Data Entry Clerk/Municipal Court Clerk.
