Two Socorro middle school students were detained last week, one for bringing a gun to a Socorro High School girls basketball game on Feb. 11.

On Thursday, Feb. 17, Socorro police were called to the Economy Inn at 3:43 a.m. for a fight, said Police Chief Mike Winders. When law enforcement arrived, the children involved were gone. At 6:16 a.m., police received another call about the suspects’ location and found the two children inside a stolen car. At 7 a.m., after police already had the two in custody, they received a call that one of the children had broken windows out of a car earlier in the morning.

That middle schooler was not involved with the incident at the basketball game but he had a juvenile hearing that afternoon and was detained on a warrant for violating the terms of his probation. The other child allegedly brought the gun to the basketball game and the District Attorney’s office helped police secure a detention order for him.

There could potentially be charges for one more kid related to the incident at the basketball game.
