The state’s leading soccer scorer Ivan Giron had a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Socorro played an excellent first half but ran out of steam in a 6-3 loss to Hatch Valley on Sept. 30.

“Our defense made a few mistakes today, and I don’t think we’re as fit as we thought. We weren’t a good second-half team out here today – we weren’t ready,” Warriors coach Daniel Sanchez said.

The Warriors matched Hatch goal for goal in the first half as the two teams exchanged goals.

The loss drops Socorro’s record to 6-6-1 and 1-1 in District 3-3A play. League play started on a positive note, with the Warriors recording a 4-0 shutout of Hot Springs.

The routine of district play is about to settle in for the Warriors, and Sanchez feels his team is in the mix for a league crown.

“We’ve got to go out and take of business, and we need a win or two where we aren’t expected to get one,” Sanchez said.

The Warriors’ next home game is set for Oct. 14 against Hot Springs in an 11 a.m. game.
