EFFORTS TO REPLACE an old fire hydrant went awry Thursday afternoon when the city Utilities department had difficulty shutting off the water to the hydrant. Utilities director Jay Santillanes said the city has been installing new hydrants throughout the city, but the department had some trouble with one at Terry Avenue. Water snaked its way from Terry down Otero to California Street. The stoplight at Otero has malfunctioned and Santillanes said the State Highway Department would be in Socorro Friday to repair the signal. Santillanes said it wasn’t clear if the standing water on California Street was the cause of the malfunction but if it was, he said, the highway department wired the light incorrectly. Santillanes said the city did get the water shut off and the hydrant replaced.

LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT officers are calling a 14-year-old boy a hero after he managed to help a driver out of his pickup when it crashed into a drainage ditch Thursday afternoon. Andrew Gonzales, a Luis Lopez resident, and Sarracino Middle School student was at his home when a man came to his door and told him that his truck had fallen into a ditch nearby and that he needed a knife to cut his friend free from his seatbelt. Gonzales and his grandfather followed the man to the scene and provided what assistance they could. The man who was in the water managed to cut himself free from the vehicle and Gonzales proceeded to help the man out of the cold, murky water. Sheriff’s Deputy, Undersheriff George Van Winkle, Sheriff Felix Saavedra, and State Police Senior Patrolman Dimitri Anagnostakos gave Gonzales a certificate of appreciation for his bravery and heroism.

AFTER SEVEN YEARS leading Socorro’s only public charter school, administrator Karin Williams is planning to hand over the reins over to Dr. Avery Ewing, a young educator from Tennessee selected for the post by the school’s parent-run governing council last week.
Ewing will take over on July 1. Williams is not retiring from education; she just wants to end her career with a return to working directly with children. Her first choice is to be a speech language pathologist in the Magdalena-Alamo area, a job she held before accepting the principalship at Cottonwood.
Williams said this year was ideal for a switch in administration, given the stability of the school and funding of the final phase of the school’s campus construction project. Williams plans to take a few weeks off in the Colorado Rockies this summer before returning home.
