Magdalena improved to 3-2 on the season as five steers got multiple hits, and sophomore Joseph Zamora belted a home run in a 17-7 run-ruled road win over Zuni on April 8.

The Steers started with a 4-0 lead after two innings and doubled that total with a four-run third before Zuni rallied with six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Magdalena tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning and ended the contest with five runs in the fifth, and Zuni was held to a single run.

Josiah Candelaria picked up the win for the Steers on the mound, but Magdalena used three other hurlers to close out the victory. Candelaria picked up three of the Steers’ pitching staff’s strikeouts and allowed three hits.

Josh Baca worked 2.1 innings and struck out one batter. Shane Montoya and Kaleb Castanon also toed the rubber for Magdalena, who allowed eight hits as a team.

Montoya collected a team-high four RBIs, while Daniel Martinez led the way in hits with three and a pair of RBIs. Zamora’s home run accounted for two runs scored, and he crossed home plate five times for the Steers. Castanon scored four runs and had an RBI, as did Baca, Candelaria and Ayden Hershbach.

Zamora, Castanon, Baca and Candeleria posted two hits each.

Magdalena travels to Shiprock to face Northwest in a doubleheader on April 15 and returns home to host Socorro on April 17 in a 3 p.m. game. The Steers have a home doubleheader against Mesilla Valley Christian School on April 22, with the first game at noon.
