Despite nearly getting blown off the mound by high winds, sophomore right-hander Shane Montoya handcuffed Lordsburg as he threw a one-hitter to lead Magdalena to a 15-5 win against Lordsburg on Saturday.

Montoya recorded double-digit strikeouts as he mowed down 10 Lordsburg batters, but he battled against the wind and had seven walks on the day.

With a comfortable five-run lead early on, Montoya tactfully focused on keeping the ball over the plate, allowing his defense to shine.

The Steers pounded out 15 total hits and batted .600 for the game.

Magdalena is gearing up for some thrilling encounters in the coming weeks. The Steers will face off against Zuni at home on April 13, followed by a showdown with defending state champion Melrose (in Estancia) on April 17.

The Steers open District 1-1A play in a pair of home games on April 20.

The Steers’ Joseph Zamora (sliding) is out with a hamstring injury suffered while running track.
