Just days after signing the first player to compete for its eSports program, New Mexico Tech announces that it has teamed up with Ecliptix Gaming and Dream Big 501©(3) to offer the first scholarship for the team. The scholarship recipient, Christopher Simpson, is a senior at Del Norte High School in Albuquerque.

According to Damian Banks, eSports program director at New Mexico Tech, Simpson just finished as the NMAA 4A State Champion in eSports this spring.

“He has already had a pretty stellar career as a shoutcaster and analyst in Rocket League,” Banks said. “He plans on continuing to develop his casting skills as well as playing for one of the rosters in the program, showing what a championship caliber talent can do at the next level of competition for the Miners team.”

As the largest organization at New Mexico Tech, the eSports program has continuously grown in the three years since it was created, according to Banks. The club has more than 300 members — about one-quarter of the school’s population.
