Socorro’s shortstop Alex Amaro and utility player Kenyon Scarborough have been named to first-team all-district 3-3A baseball, and four other players were also honored by league coaches with selections.

Warriors David Gutierrez Jr., Anthony Silva and Angel Perez were second-team honorees. Sebastian Mercado was Socorro’s only honorable mention.

“It was nice to see our guys get some validation. You put their names out there, and the other coaches are voting, and it’s great to see your competition give your guys that credit,” Socorro head baseball coach Lawrence Montano said.

Amaro and Scarborough netted the most attention from those competitors, and sound reasoning was behind their selections.

“Alex led the team in stolen bases and on-base percentage. He got better every game out in the field at shortstop,” Montano said. “Kenyon, he was just everywhere. He caught early in the season and didn’t get to play his normal position because we had him at third and first base too.”

Socorro had a tough year under their first-year coach, who is looking forward to his first offseason with the Warriors after not being afforded the practices due to the time of his hiring last year.

“We’re hoping to get all these kids in the summer and gradually move into the winter. We know a lot more about what we need to do regarding making sure we have our pitchers where they need to be. We understand when we’re going to get our wrestlers and when we’re going to get our basketball players now, so it’s easier to plan,” Montano said.

The next step for Socorro baseball is playing during the summertime, and the Warriors should be taking part in several tournaments. With Cobre, Hot Springs, and Hatch Valley all extending invitations to play, it looks like a challenging slate, and it’s a chance to scout out the competition. “We are going to keep working and developing our guys. It’s all about improving and getting more confidence out there,” Montano said.
