Socorro track teams dominate at Hot Springs meet

There’s a battle brewing on Socorro High School’s track and field team and it’s in the sport’s marquee event as senior Braden Mounyo and junior Isaiah Ocampo burned up the 100-meter dash at the 14th Annual Mike Tooley Invitational in T or C.

It was neck and neck the entire way as the duo outsprinted the heat’s field with Mounyo winning on a photo finish as Ocampo matched him stride for stride. Ocampo was seeded higher coming into the meet with a previous best of 11.59 and Mounyo’s top time set at 11.61.

The end result at Hot Springs High School was just as close, but Mounyo reversed the tables as the two ran into a brisk wind for times of 12.06 and 12.11 and first and second place overall.

It was a stellar day for Socorro with the Warriors winning their second straight meet with 152 points which was well out in front of second place Capitan (55) and third place Cobre (60.5).

The Lady Warriors appeared short-handed but that didn’t stop them from getting a second-place finish on a day where every point counted. Lordsburg paced the event with 106 points, but it was fight for Socorro whose 55 team points nudged out Tularosa (54) and Capitan (53).

The Lady Warriors’ Stephanie Chavez, Ma’Leah Brown, Adelyn Marcum and Breanne Lucero teamed up to win the 4×100 relay in a time of 59.9. Lucero added the girls pole vaulting title to her credits on the day.

When Mounyo wasn’t busy winning the 100-meter dash he was taking down first in both hurdling events and triple jump. Ocampo took down the 200 meters and Jay Lee was a winner in the 400-meter dash and the long jump.

Lee uncorked his longest leap of he season but was barely scratched by his father Cody who was officiating the event.

“It was that close,” Lee said as he held apart his thumb and forefinger about an inch apart. Lee’s best legal jump this season has been 19-11.75 and he sailed well past that mark on his scratched leap.
