I was pleased to see in last week’s Chieftain that multiple candidates are running for the office of Mayor of Socorro. The several responses I got to my housing letter (in the Aug. 3 edition) from people and investors who did not know me personally suggests a broad concern that Socorro cannot afford business as usual.

I respectfully recommend a few questions for the candidate’s questionnaire for our upcoming local election.

The first is on local issues. The latter three have the advantages of (potentially) one-word answers. They would also give the electorate insight on the judgment of the candidates and their commitment to democratic processes.

  1. What is your vision and action plan for revitalizing the business and residential sector of Socorro, including creating affordable housing?
  2. Did Neil Armstrong walk on the moon in 1969?
  3. What is the primary cause of climate change in the 21st century?
  4. Who won the Presidential election of 2020?

I know that I would greatly benefit from seeing these answered by our candidates. I encourage other patriots to contribute further questions.
