Senior Braden Mounyo keeps rewriting the Socorro High School record books. On Thursday, at the Dave Mathieu Invitational , he took down a 53-year-old 110-meter hurdle record set by Daryll Saulsberry in 1971.

Running against a stiff head’/side wind, Mounyo motored his way past Mathieu’s record time of 14.43 with a 14.39 clocking.

It’s Mounyo’s second school record of the season. At the end of last month, he ran a 39.13 at the 84th Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational in Arizona, taking down Terry Rother’s 26-year-old 300-meter hurdles record (39.43).

“It’s crazy surreal. I wasn’t expecting to do this whenever I was a freshman, but now that I’m here, it’s a little crazy,” Mounyo said.

It appears the 12-event qualifier has settled on where he will concentrate for the upcoming state meet with entries in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, pole vault, long jump and 200-meter dash.

Mounyo’s shooting to break the individual scoring mark of 20.5 points set by Socorro head football coach and local high school legend Damien Ocampo.Mounyo was one point off that individual scoring mark last season. Ocampo still holds the Class 4A discus record of 174-0.

The Biggest Grin
Nobody had a wider grin on his face than Coach Charles Zimmerly, who has guided athletes in Socorro for more than 50 years. He was the head track coach when Saulsberry set the 110-meter hurdle record at the state meet in 1971.

“It was a record I thought might never be broken while I was around. Saulsberry was a superb athlete. He went played basketball at Arkansas,” Zimmerly said.

Saulsberry’s career started at New Mexico State, and he later transferred to Yavapai College before playing two years for Arkansas, where he averaged 14.7 points a game his senior year.

Mounyo’s pulling down another record was not a surprise to boys track coach Cody Lee.
“He’s on pace where he might score right around 30 points at the state meet. He’s got to compete. He’s got to compete in all of them, and he’s got to take it one event at a time. He’s got to to continue to do what he’s been doing all year,” Lee said.

What Mounyo has been doing is adding more weightlifting to his routine, and he’s the only senior on the football team who’s continued to show up to pump more iron.

“I’m telling you that the biggest reason Braden is successful is he got in the weight room and learned how to power clean. He doesn’t miss a day,” Lee said.

Mounyo’s performance was one of many highlights for the Warriors. Mounyo won both hurdle events, the 200-meter dash and the triple jump. Jay Lee won gold in the javelin, pole vault, and long jump. Isaiah Ocampo won first place in the discus.
The result was Socorro dominating its hometown meet with 107 points which was well in front of second-place Robertson’s 78 points and third-place West Las Vegas’s 53.50.
