Strongpoint Theinert Ranch, a veterans’ retreat in Magdalena, constructed a 1,364 square-foot deck last week with a group of volunteers from all over the country.

“I am completely overwhelmed at the fact that we got this project completed. It was the largest event and service project in the history of STR,” James ‘Jimbo’ Theinert, president of the nonprofit, said. “From footings to framing to decking, railings and benches. The entire massive project was completed in less than a week, thanks to the over 30 volunteers who had a hand in the construction.”

He said the deck will increase access to the outdoors for disabled veterans and groups, in general, while hanging around the house. They plan on utilizing it for their morning wellness stretches, group yoga and stargazing activities during retreats.

Theinert said their team of volunteers were able to complete construction of the deck on Thursday, which allowed for Friday and Saturday to be utilized for other therapeutic activities that are part of the retreat program, including walking the Labyrinth and going on the Legacy Hike. Some volunteers even took the opportunity on Friday night to sleep under the stars on the newly constructed deck.

The Strongpoint Theinert Ranch is run by volunteers and offers retreats at no cost to its participants. The ranch provide retreats for active and veteran military members, their families and Gold Star families with the goal of providing a therapeutic experience.

Next week they will host a retreat for volunteer staff development for licensed mental health facilitator training.
