Six years ago, Socorro’s Aurelio Torres found himself unemployed, and he decided to take a leap of faith and trust in his cooking abilities to establish Mi Jacalito Taqueria. Today the popular eatery is the El Defensor Chieftain’s Readers’ Choice for the best tacos. Not to top itself, but Mi Jacalito is also the EDC Readers’ Choice for best food truck.

“I’m so very honored for Mi Jacalito to be chosen,” Torres said. “I want to thank all our customers who have made us successful.”

Torres’ cooking abilities had always been called on by his family when it came to the holidays and get-togethers. His unique ability to create his own recipes now has people standing in line at lunch and dinner.

What makes Mi Jacalito tacos, tortas, burritos, nachos supreme and quesadillas so special?

“Every day, we use fresh ingredients. They are all fresh vegetables, peppers, and all the meat.” Torres. “And my recipes.”

Alongside his wife, Jany, and sons, Manuel, Ximena and Uriel, Torres has worked his way up from a tiny ancient travel trailer (remodeled by the Torres family) to a full-service trailer that travels to events and offers Mi Jacalito catering.

If you have lots of hungry people at your house, you might try Mi Jacalito’s 15-taco family package, or you could buy the whole thing for yourself and take it home for seconds.

The Torres family operates Mi Jacalito at 317 S. California in Socorro when they aren’t at an event. Mi Jacalito’s phone is (575) 517-5043.
