ALBUQUERQUE—Magdalena’s 1600-meter relay team shattered the Class A state record by more than two seconds on May 6 as the Steers boys team came away with a fourth-place team finish at the New Mexico state track and field meet on the University of New Mexico campus.

The Steers’ relay team of D’Shaun Vinyard, Josh Baca, Ayden Herschbach and Kael Stephens recorded a time of 3:34.56 that put them on top of the podium and into the Magdalena record books as the fastest set of runners in the 4X400.

Kael Stephens picked up gold in the 110-meter hurdles, silver in the 300 hurdles and silver
in the pole vault.

The record win eclipsed Reserve High School’s mark of 3:36.58 set in 2018.

Stephens repeated as the state 110-meter hurdles champion, and Vinyard picked up individual state titles in the high jump (6-0) and long jump (22-1.25).

Competing against the state’s best talent brought out the best in Magdalena’s girls’ 4X800 relay as the squad of Jorianne Mirabal, Brooke Pettis, Aliza Apache and Jema Ganadonegro ran an 11:47.85 for fifth place. The time was 40 seconds faster than Magdalena’s previous finish this season.
