Magdalena got mixed results over the weekend. The Steers split a pair of games with the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers, and now both teams are tied at 3-1 for the District 1-1A championship race.

The SonBlazers Matthew Borde held Magdalena to only three hits in the first matchup as Mesilla took a five-inning 12-2 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Ayden Herschbach, Shane Montoya, and Matthew Lopez each had a hit for Magdalena. Lopez and Montoya scored the Steers’ runs.

After batting .150 in game one, the Steers got their timing down and slapped out 18 hits,. They needed all the firepower they could muster after falling behind 5-0 after the first inning.

Back-to-back four-run innings led to a 13-9 lead that Magdalena managed to hold on in a wild seventh inning.

To get the win, the Steers threw everything, but the concession stand sink at the SonBlazers and Herschbach, Zamora, Lopez, Montoya and Javen Tafoya all took mound to get the win for a combined five-hitter.

It was a wild day at the plate, with seven players making five appearances. Montoya and Tafoya were the hit leaders with three; Herschbach, Matthew Parker, Zamora, and Lopez had two.
