A COUNCIL RESOLUTION recommending one-way traffic around Socorro’s main plaza this week opened the way for discussions between the city and the New Mexico State engineer. Such a course has previously been blocked because Fisher Street is a highway and thus cannot be made one-way by municipal action. Now that I-25 is completed Fisher is “sort of a by-pass” according to Mayor Eugene, at Spring and California, which the state engineer will consider. A final topic for the upcoming meeting is the planting of highway dividers along I-25 through the middle of town.

THE NORTHEAST SIDE of the city was without electric power for about 50 minutes after a vehicle hit a power pole at the intersection of Otero and Chaparral streets. “It split the pole in half,” said Marilyn Madrid of the Socorro Electric Cooperative. She said the SEC tried to notify as many people as possible that power would have to be cut to allow crews enough time to replace the pole. Employees estimated a two-hour job, but the pole replacement was effected inside an hour. The affected area included the city’s wastewater treatment facility, Hope Farms Road, parts of the Florida trailer park and Chaparral Road north to the flood control channel.

FOOD BASKET. Low-income seniors, pregnant and post-partum mothers and children under 6 can get a free food basket every month if they qualify under the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Council for Helping Others program. ECHO is a sister program to the USDA Women, Infants and Children supplemental food program. Instead of using a card to purchase food at grocery stores or farmers markets, E.C.H.O. clients pick up a food basket once a month at the senior center. The E.C.H.O. basket is filled with about $50 worth of non-perishable food, such as canned meat, fish, vegetables and fruit as well as cereal and packaged cheese.
