WARRIORS WILL FACE Silver City Colts for the third time for their final District contest and next to the last game of the season. This will be the third meeting between the Warriors and the fighting Colts from Silver City and will be the tie-breaker.  The Warriors have won two and lost one of their last games as the season draws to a close.

SOCORRO BROWNBILT STORE marks the 31st anniversary of operation and was operated by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Goad. Brownbilt’s opened on Friday the 13th, 1941. The first store was opened on the Plaza near the Hilton Drug Store.  The store’s present location on Manzanares dates back to May 1966. The move afforded greater room to display the merchandise and allowed the Goads to extend their lines. They also provided the “Corral” where Western boots are carefully fitted to suit each customer.

LADY WARRIORS avenge loss to Grants. A 65-60 Warrior Dome win last Friday night over the Grants Lady Pirates to avenge a 53-49 loss Jan. 28 at Grants. The victory places Socorro (2-6) a notch above the Lady Pirates (1-7) in Dist. 5AAA regular season play. The Lady Warriors are 8-13 overall.

STUDENTS SUSPENDED Twenty-seven Sarracino Middle School students were suspended from school after they staged a protest march in support of a social studies teacher.  The students carried posters from the school, off north El Camino Real, to the Socorro Consolidated Schools administrative offices on Franklin Street. All 27 students, 20 boys and seven girls, were given three-day suspensions under the district’s truancy policy.

FRANKIE VALENS AND PHYLLIS VALENS will perform at the Family Christian Center in Socorro in both the morning and evening services. Valens, a pop singer who in the late 1960s and early 1970s recorded such hits as “This Magic Moment” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” has appeared in Las Vegas and toured the United States and Canada. Phyllis, his wife, is a concert pianist and widely published songwriter.

SCIENCE FAIR makes learning fun. Nearly 100 experiments were put on display in Alamo’s school gymnasium.  Students, parents and community members were invited to come see what kinds of things the kids were learning. In addition, a panel of judges rated each project, with the winners advancing to the state regional competition.

BODY FOUND IN BOSQUE the badly decomposed body of an unidentified man was found on the banks of the Rio Grande about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 16. Socorro Police Chief George Van Winkle said a passerby discovered the body about 6/10 of a mile south of where Otero Street ends at Otero Park in the Riverine Parks system, on the west bank of the river. The man is believed to be there for several months.  There was no identification on or anywhere near the body, and no wallet was found.
