Returning home after spring travels, I was sad to learn that Dr. Stephen Wells had resigned his post as president of NM Tech. I write to express gratitude for he and his wife, Beth’s, many contributions to both the university and the Socorro community. They made a difference here; they will be missed.

It was particularly regretful that Dr. Wells was not able to officiate at Tech’s 2023 graduation ceremonies. The event would have provided a fitting closure to his seven years of service to the university and would have given students the opportunity to express their admiration, gratitude and good wishes.

The Wells’ close connection with and many contributions to the city of Socorro will be missed as well. I, for one, will not look at any of Socorro’s murals without gratitude for Beth’s contribution to their creation and their unique beautification of our city. Nor will I enjoy a first-run movie at the Loma without a nod to Dr. Wells’s contribution to the theater’s technical upgrades. Hopefully, the “town and gown” connections they made will be reflected in future NM Tech leadership.

I sincerely hope that Dr. Wells’ medical concerns will be satisfactorily resolved and that he and Beth continue to enjoy their full and productive lives; and I hope their lives will continue to include Socorro and NM Tech University.
