LITTLE MISS NEW MEXICO is a local talented young miss-Paula Torres. She was selected the winner in her age to division to represent the state at a world pageant to be held in Rochester, N.Y. Nine-year old Little Miss Paula modeled a party dress and sportswear in competition, but 50 percent of the points go toward an exhibition of talent which she won easily with dramatic reading “There are too Many Saviors on My Cross”- a selection which won her first place in the Socorro Schools’ Annual Declamation Contest last spring. Paula is in the 5th grade at Zimmerly.

A MUCH-NEEDED SERVICE has been added to Socorro’s retailing outlets through the grand opening of El Caballero- a men’s shop at the new shopping center on North California. The owners, Isabelle Savedra and Jo Anne Jojola, have stocked the latest styles in matching coordinates, new styled baseball jackets and vests, beautiful ties, turtleneck sweaters, and as wide a selection of handsomely designed shirts as one could find anywhere. The stock has an unusual variety of sizes, pattern and colors so that every “caballero” around Socorro will have the look of distinction.

A MOUNTAIN LION came into Socorro Monday morning to play a quick game of cat and mouse with a group of local canines and Socorro Police Capt. Ed Britt. Britt said he got a call about 8 a.m. from a local woman who said her dogs had chased the cougar off her property and into a ravine south of Granada about a half-mile west of Socorro High School. Britt called New Mexico Game and Fish and a crew from Magdalena arrived with State Police roughly 30 minutes after Britt’s call. Britt said by the time he met with the Game and Fish crew and drove them to the ravine the cat was gone. The crew estimated the cat to be about 125 pounds and tracked it back to “M” mountain. Britt said the crew advised the Police Department to keep an eye out for the cat in the future. He said no dogs were injured Monday, but if the lion returns it may have to be trapped and relocated.

LADY WARRIORS SECURE HOME ADVANTAGE. The first district volleyball game to be held in Socorro. The Lady Warriors nailed the win on Tuesday night, playing with a new passion against the Hot Springs Tigers in their last regular season home performance of the year. The Lady Warriors secured home advantage for their first district game next Thursday, also against the Tigers, with a 3-0 win, in three tightly played sets. Seniors Tiamera Chavez, Jaedyn Gutierrez, Maria Alderete, Ashley Pyke and Natalie Paz had extra reason to play from the heart. Socorro sits second in the district with a 7-11 record, 2-1 in district.

LADY STEERS DEMONSTRATE good team effort. The Magdalena Lady Steers’ rank in the state moved up four points to 38 following their latest win over Jemez Valley last Saturday. The win also helped the Lady Steers secure home advantage for their district volleyball playoffs. They are currently sitting at No. 1 in Class 1A standings with a 17-2 record. There is great individual talent among them, but as the stats demonstrate in their Oct. 26 game against Jemez Valley, they all play a key role in the success the team.
