THE SOCORRO COUNTY MINIBUS has arrived! Bill Caldwell of Caldwell Motors is turning over the key to the beautiful white Chevrolet van bought by county revenue sharing monies for use of Community Center and Senior Citizen Services. County Commissioner Chuck Monette is happy to take possession for Socorro County of the minibus which will be used to transport county residents to various programs implemented through the two agencies.

PAUL BACA has been selected as one of eight young people in the state by the New Mexico Committee on Children and Youth for the month of December to receive the agency’s “Outstanding Youth” award. These young citizens were recently elected at a statewide youth conference as officials of a newly formed organization called Y.O.U.T.H. (Youth Organizations United to Help). The youth candidates were selected because of their demonstration of leadership, determination, and good citizenship. They also will develop work plans to form youth groups in selected communities around the state. Paul told Defensor Chieftain that he hopes to set up a cohesive youth group in Socorro which will contribute more youth input into such agencies as the city council and the school board of education.

NEWLY ELECTED SOCORRO COUNTY SHERIFF Felix Saavedra has been on the job for a week and his first order of business has been to take stock of the department and start planning for the future. Saavedra, who was sworn in Dec. 29, named former Magdalena marshal and onetime sheriff candidate George Van Winkle as his undersheriff. Van Winkle is a 10-year veteran on the Magdalena Marshals and lost to Saavedra in the June primary elections. Saavedra’s long-term goals are fairly broad. He said he plans to make changes to accommodate for the growth that Socorro county is experiencing. The future could hold new computers , and a new office, but more importantly Saavedra said, is to ensure that the department provides the best protection of the county as possible and he promises things will continue to smooth out as he takes root in his new job.

MARGARET STANLEY has been selected as National Coach of the Year for her leadership in coaching the Socorro High School girls golf team. Stanly is one of 21 high school coaches from across the country selected by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association to be honored as a 2013 National Coach of the Year. The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports, and in
one “other” sport that is not included in the 10 top listings. The NFHS also recognizes a Spirit coach as a separated award category. Winners of the NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. This year’s awards recognize coaches for the 2012-2013 school year.
